About LAFS

The Louisiana Association of Forensic Scientists (LAFS) is a professional organization that provides training, a means for sharing information, and professional networking for local forensic professionals through meetings, conferences, and the Nanogram newsletter.

On March 20th, 1971, the first organized meeting of the Louisiana Association of Forensic Scientists took place in Baton Rouge. On that day, twenty forensic scientists from around the state gathered at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for an official meeting. LAFS officially elected its first group of officers on January 29th, 1972, with Ray Herd as Chairman, Travis Owen as Vice-Chairman, and  Gretchen Fowler as Secretary/Treasurer. LAFS elects a new group of officers at the beginning of each calendar year, and the current LAFS officers are listed below.

The association currently has over 150 members representing all ten crime laboratories in Louisiana. LAFS
membership is open to any practicing forensic scientist or those that have advanced the science in a significant manner.
